What was the inspiration for this year’s Santa Faz Design?
This year its author, Francisco Climent, wanted to pay tribute to those who since his childhood and memories have been for him the symbols of Alicante. We leave you with his story:
“When it came to making this drawing I was inspired to capture the essence of Alicante in the four corners of this tile that is so popular in Alicante, thanks to Gibeller, and at the same time I was remembering the experiences of my childhood.
I was born in 1950, in a neighbourhood in the centre of Alicante. My neighbourhood, as I call it and will always call it, is San Antón, at the foot of the castle of Santa Barbara, below La Cara del Moro, the street we used to call La Cena, now Díaz Moreu. A place where my friends and I played, ran, and grew up.
When I was a child, I used to hear my mother and my aunts talking about the Spanish Civil War, they said that there was a bombing in the food market, during peak shopping hours, and in memory of those conversations and in honour of the people from Alicante who died there, I have dared to put the façade of the Central Market as another symbol of Alicante.
I also remembered the ascents of my Hercules that I experienced as a boy in the Plaza de los caballos, or Plaza de los Luceros, and remembering the mascletás that are fired in our San Juan bonfires, I thought that it is also a very Alicante symbol.
And finally, I thought of my grandmother who was very devoted to our Santa Faz, and who I used to take her for a walk along La Explanada after hearing mass in San Nicolás. Our promenade which is the pride of all the people of Alicante.
This is my humble account of this drawing, which is dear to me, and which I hope will be a memory for all the people of Alicante.
